Time Out Request - When do we Grant?
A great example of a play where there is a CLEAR and OBVIOUS request for a time out by the coach, but not having a view as to whether there is Player Control, which would be necessary before granting.
Note the coach's increasing urgency in the request, and growing frustration at the request not being granted.
We have to have the presence of mind to not react to the request without awareness of control. It has been a point of emphasis in recent years.
Also, you have to fully respect the fact that a coach (or player) will show great incredulity at any official who doesn't 'react' to them immediately. "Are you deaf??" wouldn't be a surprise to be blurted out in this situation.
They don't know what they don't know.
